Notification & Account Preferences
Overview
Covers where to find and adjust your personal RocketChat settings — profile info, notification behavior, message display, and sound — so the app fits how you actually work instead of interrupting you constantly (or not enough).
Prerequisites
- A RocketChat account. See Overview.
Steps
Open your account settings
- Click your avatar in the top right of the screen.
- Under Account, select Profile, Preferences, or another settings tab.
Update your profile
Under the Profile tab you can change your profile picture, display name, username, status message, and bio, and resend an email verification if needed.
Configure notifications
Under Preferences → Notifications, the main settings are:

| Show Desktop Notifications For | Choose All messages, Mentions only, or Nothing. |
| Send Push Notifications For | Same options, but for the mobile app. |
| Offline Email Notifications | Get an email for every mention/DM while you're offline, or disable entirely. |
| Require Interaction to Dismiss | Keeps a desktop notification on screen until you act on it. |
Mentions include @username, @here, and @all. Email notifications require a verified email address (resend verification from the Profile tab).
Set your status and auto-away
Click your avatar to set your status manually (Online, Away, Busy, Offline, or a custom message). To have it change automatically, go to Preferences → User presence and enable Auto-Away with an idle time limit.
Adjust message display and sound
Under Preferences → Messages, you can control things like the Enter key behavior (send vs. new line), auto-loading images, and how thread replies show up in the main channel. Under Preferences → Sound, you can set master volume, per-notification-type volume, and the sounds played for new messages and new rooms.
Set highlight words
Under Preferences → Highlights, add a comma-separated list of words or phrases (not case-sensitive) — you'll get a notification whenever anyone uses one of them in a room you're in, even without a direct @mention.

Troubleshooting
- Not receiving email notifications: your email address may not be verified — go to Profile and resend the verification email.
- Too many notifications: switch Show Desktop Notifications For and Send Push Notifications For to Mentions instead of All messages.
- Status stuck on Away: check your Auto-Away idle time limit under Preferences → User presence — you may need to refresh the page after changing it.
